Der 5. Oktober wurde von Harvey Ball, dem Erfinder des Smiley Logos,
zum "World Smile Day" ausgerufen. Harvey Ball verstarb im April 2001
ausgerechnet an dem Tag, an dem die erste Hip House Hooray Party
stattfand. Lebensfreude und gute Laune sollte der Smiley-Sticker
symbolisieren. Mit Erfolg: Anfang der 70er Jahre hefteten ihn sich über
50 Millionen Amerikaner an ihre Jacken. Das lachende Gesicht auf gelbem
Grund schmückte 1999 sogar eine Briefmarke. Seit Ende der 80er wird der
Smiley mit Acid- und Hip House assoziiert. Womit wir wieder bei Hip
House Hooray wären: Die nächste Party findet morgen abend im Hafenklang
statt und als Vorgeschmack gibt es heute einen zweistündigen HipHouse-Mix
vom Vinylizer.

Heute geht's in der ersten Stunde doch keinen Mix von Safety Scissors (der
ist immer noch nicht angekommen und nun für den 23.10. eingeplant), sondern
ein Poetry-Slam-Special. Die Informationen kommen von keiner geringeren als
Ursula Rucker, die gerade ein Debut-Album mit dem Titel Supa Sista auf
Stud!o K7 veröffentlicht hat. In diesem
Special geht sie auf die Geschichte der Poetry Slams ein, sie stellt uns
bekannte Redner wie Saul Williams, Sarah Jones, Mike Ladd oder Carl Hancock
Rux sowie deren Vorbilder Gil Scott Heron, Amiri Baraka und Nikki Giovanni
vor und führt uns an die Orte, an denen Poetry Slam stattfindet - allen
voran das Nuyorican Poets Café. Daneben gibt es Stücke von Saul Williams,
Sarah Jones und Ursula Rucker - u.a. aus ihrem Album, aber auch aus dem
bald erscheinenden 4 Hero Album "Creating Patterns", auf dem sie ebenfalls

Mi, 17.10.2001 20-21 Uhr OKH | BTTB - Back To The Basics Los geht's mit einem neuen HipHop-Projekt aus Glasgow: Belles In Monica nennen sie sich und ihr Debut-Album "Resistance Is Futile" soll im Januar erscheinen. In BTTB könnt ihr zwei Stücke schon heute hören - weitere Stücke und Remixes folgen in den nächsten Sendungen. Dann geht es weiter mit einem Stück von der HipHop-Compilation "Ladies First", auf der nur weibliche MCs aus deutschsprachigen Ländern zu finden sind. Vom Deutsch-HipHop kommen wir über Deutsch-Reggae (mit Silly Walks) zu "richtigem" Reggae: Degree vom Greensleeves-Label ist dabei und wir stellen die neue 500% Dynamite vor, die wie immer mit einer hervorragenden Ansammlung an Reggae-Stücken bestechen kann. Stattdessen stellt der Vinylizer neue und alte Platten vor. Unter anderem gibt es Musik von Neotropic, die eine eigene 7" auf n-tone und eine weitere auf ihrem eigenen Label Council Folk rausgebracht hat. BTTB - Soul <-> HipHop: Der Vinylizer 
Oder heute besser Jazz <-> Jazz. Denn auch im modernen Jazz wird gesamplet, und zwar
gerne bei altem Jazz. Heute stehen zwei englische Projekte im Mittelpunkt, deren
Karrieren auch noch den gleichen Ausgangspunkt haben: Ninja Tune. Eine der ersten
Ninja-Maxis war 1991 "The Band Played The Boogie" von einem Projekt namens NW1. Das
Stück basierte auf einem Sample des Blue-Note-Klassikers "Sookie Sookie" von Grant
Green. Der Anruf von Blue Note lies auch nicht lange auf sich warten, und Geoff
Wilkinson ging reumütig zum Blue-Note-Büro. War aber nicht so schlimm - er bekam keine
Anklagedrohung sondern die Möglichkeit, mit unbeschränktem Zugriff auf das grose Blue
Note Archiv ein Album zu produzieren, das dann auf Blue Note erscheinen sollte.
Natürlich nahm er das Angebot an und schon bald darauf erschien das erste Album unter
dem neuen Projektnamen Us 3 mit dem Titel "Hand On The Torch". In wenigen Tagen wird das
dritte Us3-Album "An Ordinary Day In An Unusual Place" erscheinen, und diese Gelegenheit
nutzen wir um die beiden bekanntesten Stücke aus dem Debut-Album samt Sample-Quellen zu
spielen.
Danach geht es weiter mit dem Cinematic Orchestra, dessen Karriere nicht nur
bei Ninja Tune startete, sondern das immer noch bei Ninja Tune zuhause ist. Auch vom
Cinematic Orchestra hören wir zwei Stücke aus dem 99er Debut-Album "Motion" samt der
zugehörigen Sample-Quellen. Das Bild ist etwas irreführend: Es zeigt Jason Swinscoe, den
Kopf vom Cinematic Orchestra, an den Plattentellern. Cinematic Orchestra besteht aber
nicht nur aus Jason und ist andererseits ein echtes Live-Projekt, in dem Djing nur ein
Element ist.

Heute gibt's einen Mix von einem Projekt, von dem ich lange geglaubt hab,
daß sie aus den USA stammen. Umso überraschter war ich, als ich hörte, daß sie
in Wirklichkeit in München wohnen. Dort haben sie sich in den 80'ern
kennengelernt und öfters zusammen musiziert. 1991 gründeten sie die Poets
of Rhythm und schon 1992 produzierten sie auf eigene Kosten ihre erste 7",
für die sie mit Hotpie & Candy sogar ein Label gründeten. Die nahmen sie
mit in die USA und liessen sie dort in einem Plattenladen in New Orleans
zurück. Was folgte hört sich an wie ein schlechter Film, ist aber wahr:
Lyrics Born von DJ Shadow's Solesides Label wurde auf die 7" aufmerksam,
weil ihm ein Bild der Band, das die Poets in die 7" gesteckt hatten, gefiel:
"I first discovered the Poets of Rhythm on a record buying trip to New
Orleans in the early nineties. It was one of their anonymous releases on
their Hotpie & Candy label, and included in the sleeve was a photo of the
guys in front of Sea-Saint studios, the famous studio owned by Meters
producer Allen Toussaint. I was totally confused by the photo, and figured
it must have been planted in the sleeve by some record collector practicing
a random act of silliness. I was totally convinced this was a 45 from the
early 70's based on the title, the way it was mixed, the instrumentation,
and the arrangements. When I asked around to my collector friends, nobody
seemed to have heard of the group, but some did have other singles on the label."
Er kaufte sie also und ihm gefiel auch die Musik: "Total commitment to authenticity with regard to that special era of funk they embodied so well" sagt er. Die Poets im fernen München wußten davon natürlich nichts, und die Geschichte wär im Sande verlaufen, wenn sie nicht 1993 ihr Debut-Album "Practice What You Preach" aufgenommen hätten. Lyrics Born: "About a year later, the only cool record store in Davis had an album by the Poets of Rhythm, and after seeing them on the cover, I instantly made the connection. What set them apart was their total commitment to authenticity with regard to that special era of funk they embodied so well. With the release of the Latyrx album on Solesides, I was in constant contact with a SoleSides enthusiast who championed our album within our then German distributor. I had done a song called 'Burnt Pride' that had a very live feel, and wanted to further pursue making more live music, and asked if he knew of this group in Germany that I knew could interpret my ideas. The group I asked him about was the Poets of Rhythm. As soon as he told me he was one of their producers we began trading tapes and stories, and the relationship was established." 1998 flog Lyrics Born nach Deutschland, um mit den Poets an gemeinsamen Stücken zu arbeiten. Während dieser Zeit hatte er Gelegenheit, die neuen Stücke der Poets anzuhören. "Listening to the tracks I was blown away by the way they had grown so much since the Hotpie and Candy/Practice What You Preach days. Gone were the 'funky' song titles and James Brown-ish grunts. What replaced them were incredibly intricate arrangements and rhythms, each instrument cleverly placed to fill in the gaps within the bar, creating an exhilarating 'push-pull' effect. The musicianship was now world-class and tighter than most bands I have heard in our time period, regardless of genre. It sounded so good, I had to borrow the backing track for what would later become our club hit, 'I Changed My Mind''. Diese Titel wurden kürzlich auf dem Album "Discern/Define" veröffentlicht. Ninja Tune vertreibt das Album in Europa und hat uns drei CDs zum Verlosen angeboten. Die Preisfrage lautet: Das Solesides-Label von DJ Shadow wurde kürzlich umbenannt. Wie heißt es heute? Künstler Treu war bisher bekannt als eine Hälfte von Dauerfisch und wandelt
inzwischen auf Solo-Pfaden. Sein erstes Solo-Album heißt "My Sketchbook Of
Whack" und ist soeben auf eleganz
erschienen. Es handelt sich bei diesem Album um eine wilde Mischung aus
allem möglichen obskuren Material, das er in den letzten Jahren auftreiben
konnte. Nebenbei hat Künstler Treu in all den Jahren regelmäßig für sein
Privatvergnügen und für Freunde Compilations zusammengemixt, die sehr
unterhaltsam sind. Eine dieser Collagen hat er nun auch als X-Session
für die BTTB-Hörer zusammengemixt. Musikalisch gibts viel weirdness
aus den 50s, 60's, zum teil aber auch neuere Sachen. Das alles gemixt
mit seltsamen spoken word- und soundbytes aus aller Welt und dem Universum.
Den Mix hat er "The Robo-Chicken - Malfunktion And Support Handbook" genannt.

Seine erste Platte "Being Born" hat er 1994 veröffentlicht. Mi, 31.10.2001 00-12 Uhr | BTTB-X-Series: Black Dog Productions Black Dog Productions wurde 1988 von Ken Downie, Ed Handley und Andy Turner gegründet. Ein Jahr nachdem Larry Heard aka Mr. Fingers ihre Bitte, einen Remix für sie anzufertigen, nicht annahm, weil ihm die Stücke "zu weird" waren, brachten sie mit der Virtual EP auf Black Dog Records ihre erste Veröffentlichung raus. Es folgten einige weitere Platten und schnell erregten sie die Aufmerksamkeit von Warp und R&S Records. 1993 erschien mit "Bytes" ihr Debut-Album auf Warp. Es folgten viele Remixes für Künstler wie Nicolette und Björk. Ein Jahr später folgte das Album Temple Of Transparent Balls auf GPR und mit Spanners erschien 1995 schließlich das letzte Album der Original-Black-Dog-Crew. Ed und Andy gründeten daraufhin Plaid, während Ken als Black Dog Productions weitermachte. 1996 brachte er das Solo-Album Music For Adverts (And Short Films) auf Warp raus und 1999 folgte eine Kollaboration mit Ofra Haza. Jetzt hat Ken das aktuelle Album von Beth Hirsch produziert, das gerade auf Studio K7 erschienen ist. Sehr sehenswert ist die Black-Dog-Website unter der Adresse www.dogsquad.com. A vast back catalogue of 12" releases and remixes is not what osymyso
has been about up until now, osymyso has been about the one off
presentation of 'bootleg' mixes and topical recontextualisation and
representation of ideas and concepts. So to truly experience osymyso
you have to hear a mix or be in the crowd at an event he is performing
at.
