Shining lights on the UK Breaks scene and THE HOTTEST group around are nu-skool pioneers The Freestylers. With a tuff mix of old and upfront beats, they have a knack for throwing down the most ear-bendingly fresh tracks around.
Coming together two years ago, the collective boasts an impressive array of talented individuals. Overseeing the group are top producers Aston Harvey (ex-Blapps Posse) and Matt Cantor (Major London Breaks DJ). Cutting it up is DJ champion J-Rock (aka Mad Doctor X / Ninja Tune stalwart) alongside the bass gymnastics of Jo, the axe murdering of Chris and the hard beats of Clive (the alternative Funky Drummer). The centre stage duties are ably shared by Tenor Fly (major UK Reggae artist) and MC Navigator (Drum and Bass MC, BBC Radio 1FM).
Their live shows sparkle with energy - early performances at top London Nights (Blue Note, 333, Ministry Of Sound, Bar Rhumba) have become legendary. Coupled by the sometimes 30 strong Freska Breakdancing Crew, their infectious and lively performances has seen them take it further to larger venues (The G-Mex etc) and still rock da house! This year annual festivals Glastonbury, Reading, Phoenix and Creamfields will be hit by the fury of The Freestylers live! Europe has also been targeted with confirmed dates in Germany, France, Holland, Sweden and Norway.
With a following built up from early records (the fantastic Drop The Boom and Don't Stop), their fan base has increased since they hit the Freskanova label last year. Ruling the Big Beat charts over the past year, they have been supported by virtually every DJ - including massive support from the likes of Pete Tong, Judge Jules, David Rodigan and Mary-Anne Hobbs.
With big deals on the cards from the States and the album due in September 1998 should see The Frrestylers taking their rightful place as leaders of the new school. During the coming month the lads will be flying to Miami to record a new album track featuring the vocal talents of the incredible Soul Sonic Force. In the new album we should also hear the results of their planned New York project featuring Chuck D of Public Enemy!
